PECANS Workshop 2007

The 2007 PECANS workshop took place over two days from 26-27 April 2007 at the University of Westminster. There are also a number of other CentreLGS events taking place around the same time, including the CentreLGS Annual lecture by Lois McNay (Oxford University), 'Liquid Lives, Wholesome Selves' a one day workshop in the Law & Culture research cluster, and 'Revisiting the Material' a one day workshop in the Governance and Regulation research cluster - please see the CentreLGS website for more information.
Outline Programme:
Day 1 - Thursday 26 April: Workshops
The first day of the PECANS Workshop will have three practical workshop sessions for postgraduate students and early career academics working in law, gender and sexuality:

The writing process, with Sally Sheldon and Nicky Priaulx

Career pathways for early career scholars , with Sari Kuovo and Davina Cooper

How (not) to be a job applicant, with performances from Didi Herman and Joanne Conaghan
We are also delighted that Lois McNay, who will be giving the 2007 CentreLGS Annual Lecture, will be participating in an 'Author Meets Readers' session, giving postgraduate and early career scholars at the workshop the opportunity to discuss her work in advance of the lecture that evening. To facilitate discussion, a chapter of Lois McNay's forthcoming book will be circulated to workshop participants in advance
Day 2 - Friday 27 April: PECANS Conference
Day two of the workshop will be a one-day conference for postgraduates and early career academics on the theme of 'Beyond Critique'
Critique is an essential component of academic work in the law, gender and sexuality field – we are all trained in critical thinking and encouraged to critique existing practices and structures as well as the work of others. But is the job of academics simply to critique existing practices and structures? Can we, as academics, imagine new ways of living and new kinds of social and legal structures?
